Introduction: The introduction of Rotarix® in immunization programs in Brazil occurred in March 2006. In this study, we evaluated the effect of the vaccine on the severity of diarrhea in children in the period between january 2007 and december 2012. Methods: Children under 12 admitted with the diagnosis of acute diarrhea in the Hospital de Urgência de Sergipe were chosen for the study. A questionnaire was developed for the research through which it was possible to assess the severity of diarrhea. Stool samples of these children were analyzed for the presence of rotavirus. Results: The score of the severity score in children younger than 6 months was 13.1 (±3.5) in vaccinated and 14.1 (±3.2) in unvaccinated (p = 0.002) and greater than 24sixmonths the average was 12.5 (±3.0) and 14.1 (±2.9) in vaccinated and unvaccinated, respectively (p <0.001). The severity of diarrhea episodes was higher when linked to the rotavirus.
