Background: This study aims to evaluate the level of knowledge of adolescents about the HPV vaccine in public and private schools in the city of Aracaju, Sergipe. In addition to determining the socio demographic feature and sexual behavior, with comparative analysis of both groups. Methods: The study is cross-sectional done by applying a questionnaire to 810 girls from 10 to19 years of public and private schools in Aracaju, Sergipe, in 2012. All participants aged 18 years and responsible for underage signed the consent form. The study was approved by the Ethics Committee of the Federal University of Sergipe. For statistical analysis was made tables of frequency distribution and performed tests of association of variables. Results: The most common age range in both schools was 16-19 years. In private schools the majority have heard the HPV vaccine and only 11 (3,4%) received three doses of the vaccine. In public schools the majority had never heard of the vaccine and none were vaccinated. Knowledge about the HPV vaccine had statistical significance with the use of contraceptives, living with parents, having previously taken preventive and knowledge about HPV in the case of private schools. In the public only knowledge about HPV was significantly associated. Conclusions: There were significant differences in relation to knowledge about the HPV vaccine between the two groups. The majority in both schools claimed to know HPV and this knowledge was significantly associated with knowledge of the vaccine
