Arising as a simple contribution to the understanding of the great collection coming from the Xingó Archaeological Rescue Project. This research builds a brief history of tobacco consumption and the use of smoking pipes in the Macro-Jê groups, understanding a relation between these peoples and the inhabitants of Xingó, to create an initial idea of the practices of making and using pipes among Native Americans. The focus of this research is recurrent in numerous sites, cited in various archaeological and ethnographic works that attest its importance among Amerindian peoples. By gathering information from site excavation reports and academic papers on the region, this work continues with a focus on the collections associated with the pipes to understand their context in the different occupations’ layers of the sites. Finally, the research elucidates a series of proposed questions about the clay and nonclay minerals in order to describe the changes that have arisen throughout the archaeological record.
