Resumo: The article presents reflections on higher education with a focus on its expansion and on the modality of distance learning (EAD). The intention is to problematize the process of commodification and privatization of Brazilian higher education and the challenges faced by some professions, including Social Work. This is documentary research having as main source the dissertations defended in the Postgraduate Program in Social Work at the Federal University of Sergipe (PROSS/UFS), from 2013 to 2020. Among the results, of the total of 81 dissertations defended, the production of knowledge on the subject of education is present in thirteen, and of these, two emphasize the expansion of higher education, especially in the private sphere, and one the EAD modality. Education as a right is giving way to its commodification in neoliberalism.

Trata-se de uma pesquisa documental tendo como principal fonte as dissertações defendidas no Programa de Pós-Graduação em Serviço Social da Universidade Federal de Sergipe (PROSS/UFS), no período de 2013 a 2020. Entre os resultados, do total de 81 dissertações defendidas, a produção de conhecimento acerca da temática educação está presente em 13, sendo que destas, duas enfatizam a expansão do ensino superior, especialmente no âmbito privado, e uma a modalidade EAD.
