Criminalidade digital em tempos de pandemia : principais ocorrências em Sergipe no ano de 2020

This research has investigated cybercrimes encompassing the most frequent occurrences in Sergipe, during the period of March to December of 2020 in which a social isolation was imposed to most of the state’s population because of COVID-19 pandemic. The general goal of the research was the analysis of the cybercrimes which occurred at this isolation period to verify a possible increase in their numbers as compared to the previous year. As specific goals, it has been attempted to comprehend these cybercrimes from the perspective of their terminologies and classifications; as well as to examine the existing legislation regarding cybercrimes and the protection on digital environment, and to identify which cybercrimes occurred in Sergipe in the aforementioned period having as sources the data collected from the Coordination of Statistics and Criminal Analysis – CEACrim -, a department of Sergipe’s Public Security Secretary. The data collection had as its goal the analysis of the crimes that occured in 2019 and their comparison with those that occured in the period of March to December 2020, which enabled a comparative analysis and verification of a significant increase in cybercrimes occurrences. Afterwards, the crimes were categorized in 7 (seven) criminal types whose numbers were most significant, and those were digital fraud, invasion of digital devices, threat, defamation, slander, theft and calumny. It has been revealed an increase of cybercrimes of, as a rule, nearly 260% (two hundred percent) in 2020 as compared to 2019, possibly as a consequence of an increased interaction among people in digital environment, namely, the Internet, caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and its restrictions. Besides, it has been verified that digital fraud has maintained itself at the forefront if compared to the other crimes in both 2019 and 2020 periods and the other crimes, namely, the invasion of digital devices, threat, defamation, slander, theft and calumny have ranked the same in both 2019 and 2020 analyzed periods.
