Resumo: | Objectives: The present study intends to describe the results of the ultrasonographic evaluation of the scrotum in children born with Congenital Zika Syndrome (CZS) followed at the Microcephaly Clinic of the Teaching Hospital of the Federal University of Sergipe, for the presence or absence of testicular atrophy and cryptorchidism and testicular volume of the subjects. Methods: This is a cross-sectional descriptive study conducted at the Microcephaly Clinic of the Teaching Hospital of the Federal University of Sergipe, with boys between 2 and 3 years of age with CZS. The testicular volume, the presence of cryptorchidism and testicular atrophy were determined by ultrasonographic imaging of the scrotum performed by a radiologist physician of the Teaching Hospital of the Federal University of Sergipe. The results were then organized for statistic analysis. Results: Of the 22 boys, 9 (41%) were classified as having bilateral or unilateral cryptorchidism; 13 (59%) had their testis inside the scrotum, in its normal position. The prevalence found of testicular atrophy was 73%, includind unilateral or bilateral cases. The mean testicular volume was 0,52mL. Conclusions: This study has shown high prevalences of testicular atrophy and cryptorchidism among children with CZS, in superior numbers than showed in available literature in healthy subjects. It was not possible to stablish a correlation between CZS and testicular atrophy, and more studies are needed to stablish a relation of causality between these two conditions; also, prospective studies are needed to evaluate the progression over longer periods of time of testicular atrophy and hypofertility. |
