Tumores renais em crianças: epidemiologia e sobrevida em Sergipe

Malignant renal tumors account for about 6% of all pediatric cancers, and the Wilms Tumor the most common type. Objectives: to describe the epidemiology and survival for renal tumors of pediatric oncology patients enrolled in public pediatric oncology in Aracaju, Sergipe. Method: was made to collect data from medical records of 105 patients diagnosed with malignant renal tumors enrolled in two public pediatric oncology Aracaju, in the period 1980-2012. The results were analyzed using SPSS version 19.0 and presented in absolute numbers and proportions (confidence interval 95%). Survival was assessed by Kaplan-Meier. Results: six patients (5.7%) had bilateral involvement, histologic subtype was more frequently Wilms tumor with 96 cases (91.4%). 91 patients (86.7%) were from the state of Sergipe. The age group most affected was 0-4 years with 75.2%. The time of onset of signs and / or symptoms did not exceed 3 months in 75.2% of patients, 53.3% were female and 63.8% were nonwhite ethnicity. Conclusions: the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of pediatric renal tumors found in this study are consistent with findings in the literature, except in the age of patients with renal cell carcinoma. The 5-year survival in the state of Sergipe is compatible to that found in Brazil and lower than the developed countries.
