Resumo: The cultural relations between Brazil and France represent a vast and fruitful study field for researchers. Since 2016, the Federal University of Sergipe has developed a project – “De la musique avant toute chose” [Music above all] – aimed at the study of such relations within a specific framework: the presence of poetry written in French, such as song lyrics, in Brazilian musical pieces composed at the turn of the 19th into the 20th century. In this article, we will present retranslations of three poems by Victor Hugo (1802-1885) – “Extase”, “Sultan Achmet” and “La tombe dit à la rose” – with musical score by Francisco Braga (1868-1945), with the addition of some notes about the collections where such poems were first published (Les Orientales and Les Voix intérieures), about a few translations previously published in Brazil and, finally, about the proposed retranslations according to translation scholars such as Antoine Berman and Mário Laranjeira. Keywords: Brazil – France cultural relations. Poetic translation. Victor Hugo. Francisco Braga. Brazilian songs.

Brazilian songs. Victor Hugo. Francisco Braga.
