RESUMO: A partir da experiência adquirida com a ficção de José Saramago, constatamos a ausência de pesquisas mais consistentes em relação ao período formativo do autor, que muito contribui para que se compreenda o desenvolvimento dos temas relacionados com o insólito ficcional presentes nos romances do autor português. Nossa proposta para este artigo tem como meta inicial oferecer a análise do conto “Centauro”, presente em Objecto quase (1978), evidenciando que a estruturação dos elementos representativos do insólito – no presente caso, o mito e o maravilhoso –, fundada no imaginário como aparência de realidade, a reconduz a um mundo alternativo a partir da efabulação pautada na oralidade. A constatação de tais elementos, já nas origens da ficção saramaguiana, confirma uma prefiguração dos gêneros que se manifestarão sob novas abordagens em sua produção posterior. Imaginário.        ABSTRACT: Using the experience acquired in our studies of José Saramago’s fiction, we have observed the absence of more thorough research regarding this author’s formative period, which brings important contributions to understand the development of themes related to the fictional insolite that can be found in his novels. Our proposal for this article has as its initial aim the analysis of the short story “Centauro”, published in the collection Objecto quase (1978), evidencing that the structuration of representative elements of the insolite – in the present case, myth and the marvelous –, founded in the imaginary with the appearance of reality, creates an alternative world with the help of orality-based fabulation. Observing such elements in the very origins of Saramagian fiction confirms the prefiguration of genres that will become manifest under new approaches in his later literary output. KEYWORDS: Centauro.
