Resumo: The Exchange Program for Undergraduate Students (PEC-G) is one of the oldest international cooperation programs in higher education established by Brazil in partnership with developing countries in Latin America, Caribbean, Africa, Asia and Europe. These students can take Portuguese courses in Brazililian institutions of higher education in order to prepare for the Certificate of Proficiency in Portuguese for Foreigners (Celpe-Bras), one of the requirements for their de facto entry into the PEC-G. In this paper, we analyze the beliefs about Celpe-Bras of agents involved in a Portuguese course for candidates to the PEC-G (students, teachers and supervisor). We adopted the theoretical notion of language policy mechanisms (SHOHAMY, 2006) and made semi-structured interviews with the agents. We made use of contributions from Textual Linguistics and Argumentative Semantics (KOCH, 2000, 2011) in data analysis. The conclusions pointed to the agents’ unanimous beliefs about Celpe-Bras as a highly demanding exam, although with particularities regarding the interpretation of what is, in fact, evaluated by the test. Keywords: Language policy. Portuguese as an additional language. Celpe-Bras. PEC-G.
