Resumo: The way in which Plato articulates his discourse about women in Book V of Republic gives rise to a contradiction. On the one hand, women are granted rights and released from male domination in 453a-457b but are again placed as male property in 457d-466c. This ambiguity has given rise to a profuse debate about whether Plato really subscribed to women's equality or whether he considers them to be the property of men. In the present paper, I suggest an interpretation of this ambiguity as a rhetorical effect that reveals the patriarchal character of the language that surrounds the very institution of the oîkos and goes beyond the question about the author's intentions.

Por un lado, se les otorga derechos y se las libera de la dominación masculina en 453a-457b, pero se las sitúa nuevamente en calidad de propiedad de los hombres en 457d- 466c. Dicha ambigüedad ha dado lugar a un profuso debate en torno a si Platón suscribió realmente a la igualdad de las mujeres o si las considera propiedad de los hombres. En el presente trabajo propongo interpretar esta ambigüedad del texto como un efecto retórico que deja traslucir el carácter patriarcal del lenguaje que envuelve a la institución misma del oîkos y que va más allá de la pregunta por las intenciones del autor.O modo como Platão articula seu discurso sobre as mulheres no Livro V da República gera uma espécie de contradição. Por um lado, elas recebem direitos e são libertadas do domínio masculino em 453a-457b, mas novamente são colocadas como propriedade masculina em 457d-466c. Essa ambiguidade deu origem a um debate profuso sobre se Platão realmente subscreveu a igualdade das mulheres ou se as considera propriedade dos homens.
