Resumo: | The specific composition and community structure of the arboreal component in the peat forests of Taim were analysed by the point-centered quarter method. A total of only 30 sample-points were shown to be significant in the characterization of trees with a diameter greater than or equal to 10 cm at the diameter at breast height (DBH). The swamp forests of Taim present an impoverished number of tree species, the most important being, in decreasing importance value (IV), Erythrina crista-galli, Ficus organensis, Blepharocalyx salicifolius, Eugenia uruguayensis e Sebastiania brasiliensis. The Shannon index of diversity (H' = 1.886) is one of the lowest reported for Brazilian arboreal communities, probably affected by the southern latitude (lower temperatures) and waterlogged soils (oxygen deficiency). The forest structure is characterized by two clearly discontinuous layers which are composed of relatively high and vigorous trees (E. crista-galli and F. organensis) and of lower and thinner trees (B. salicifolius, E. uruguayensis e S. brasiliensis). |

Um total de apenas 30 pontos de amostragem revelou-se significativo para a caracterização de árvores com diâmetro na altura do peito (DAP) igual ou superior a 10cm. As matas turfosas apresentam um número reduzido de espécies arbóreas, destacando-se, em ordem decrescente de valor de importância (VI), Erythrina crista-galli, Ficus organensis, Blepharocalyx salicifolius, Eugenia uruguayensis e Sebastiania brasiliensis. O índice de diversidade de Shannon (H' = 1,886) é um dos mais baixos já registrados para comunidades arbóreas do Brasil, provavelmente influenciado pela latitude austral (temperaturas mais baixas) e pelo solo encharcado (deficiência de oxigênio).
