Resumo: Oxygen study was conducted to verify the effects of the respiratory alkalosis on the oxygen consumption during a cycle ergo meter exercise in 15 volunteers aging 24,0 +- 3,4 years, fisically  active, who were divided into two groups of 5 and 10 subjects respectively. In the first group, ventilation, oxygen consumption. CO2 production and the pH and the 02 and CO2 partial pressures of the blood were assessed before, during and after two minutes of volunteer hyperventilation. In the second group only the respiratory variables were measured during the cycloergometer exercise , both with and without and after two voluntary hyperventilation. It was verified that the respiratory alkalosis did not modify the ventilation and also that the oxygen consumption tended towards an increase during the exercise, while the respiratory exchange ratio and the mechanical efficiency decreased. The results of this study suggest that respiratory alkalosis may increase the oxygen uptake during the cycle ergo meter exercise, due to the Bohr Effect.
