Addressing the social innovation spectrum: a theoretical-conceptual discussion

The social innovation phenomenon is not considered new, but its theoretical conceptualization still requires a certain level of scientific depth. Aiming to contribute to this theme, this study seeks to identify, based on a theoretical-conceptual analysis, which are the primordial characteristics that make up the spectrum of social innovation. From the conceptual discussion and analysis of propositions from previous studies, it was observed that social innovation implies, above all, in sustainable development, inclusion, equity and granting of rights. Furthermore, four analytical categories were proposed for studies on social innovation, namely: innovativeness; social motivation; collective construction; and transformative potential for society. Regarding the action radius, it was indicated that the socially innovative phenomenon can occur at the incremental, institutional and disruptive levels. Finally, it was observed that, although it runs the risk of being distorted by the neoliberal system, social innovation can be a path of resistance and opposition to inequalities and social apathy related to the suffering of others.
