Resumo: This article addresses the issue of intraparty competition in open list proportional elections. Although the literature expects that Brazilian electoral rules encourage direct competition for votes among co-partisans, there are few efforts to measure the levels of this competition. Through voting correlations, by electoral zones, we discuss the degrees of spatial overlapping of candidacies within four parties in the race for the office of federal deputy in the state of São Paulo in 2014. We find variations in the levels of intraparty competition that indicate different coordination strategies in the selection of candidates. This variety shows that, besides the incentives of electoral rules, the agents' strategic responses to these rules should not be neglected when dealing with this theme.

Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC)2019-12-16info:eu-repo/semantics/articleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionapplication/pdfhttps://periodicos.ufsc.br/index.php/politica/article/view/2175-7984.2019v18n42p18110.5007/2175-7984.2019v18n42p181Política & Sociedade; Vol. 18 No. 42 (2019); 181-223Política & Sociedade; Vol. 18 Núm. 42 (2019); 181-223Política & Sociedade; v. 18 n. 42 (2019); 181-2232175-79841677-4140reponame:Política & Sociedade (Online)instname:Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC)instacron:UFSCporhttps://periodicos.ufsc.br/index.php/politica/article/view/2175-7984.2019v18n42p181/42127Copyright (c) 2019 Política & Sociedadeinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessSouza, Cíntia Pinheiro Ribeiro deGraça, Luís Felipe Guedes da2019-12-19T11:29:33Zoai:periodicos.ufsc.br:article/61428Revistahttp://www.periodicos.ufsc.br/index.php/politicaPUBhttps://periodicos.ufsc.br/index.php/politica/oai||ernesto.seidl@ufsc.br|| ps@cfh.ufsc.br2175-79841677-4140opendoar:2019-12-19T11:29:33Política & Sociedade (Online) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC)false
