Resumo: This essay intends to examine the contradictory relation among some Brazilian romantic works. After the Brazilian independence, Ferdinand Denis and Almeida Garrett arrogate the task of determine the characteristics of what an effective national romantic literature should be. Indianism and the validation of nature were indispensable elements which they both found in O Uraguai by Basílio da Gama and Caramuru, by José de Santa Rita Durão, works published in the 18th century. In 1854, Gonçalves de Magalhães decided to write the effective epic Brazilian work to pay homage to Second Reign. However, in choosing the historical event about which the glory of Indians and the anti-Portugal feelings could be expressed, he exposed the question of the conquest, which goes against the narrative of sovereignty, and made the exterminated yelled the legitimacy of his exterminator.

Com a independência do Brasil, Ferdinand Denis e Almeida Garrett se arrogaram a tarefa de determinar as características do que seria uma literatura romântica efetivamente nacional. O indianismo e a valorização da natureza eram dois elementos imprescindíveis que ambos encontraram nas obras O Uraguai de Basílio da Gama e Caramuru de José de Santa Rita Durão, publicadas no século XVIII. Em meados do século XIX, Gonçalves de Magalhães decidiu escrever a obra épica efetivamente brasileira para homenagear o Segundo Reinado.
