Resumo: Geographical Indications are registrations used to ensure the quality and reputation of a product by connecting it to its source, reducing information asymmetries and protecting the territory from opportunistic action. Considering the difficulties faced by farmers to access markets, this research examined how these registrations favor the coordination in the agrifood coffee system for family farmers. It also identified the contribution to territorial development, specifically within the Mantiqueira region in Minas Gerais State and in Norte Pioneiro region in Paraná State. The New Institutional Economics supported the analysis of vertical coordination, considering the choice of efficient governance structure. Localized Agrifood System supported understanding horizontal coordination and territorial development. A multiple case study was carried out and the results indicated that Geographical Indications promote horizontal coordination as it strengthens the links between social actors that comprise the territory.
