The Estado Novo and its quest for new territorial and symbolic spaces

Resumo: This article presents a brief sketch of its author’s trajectory in studying the following themes related to the Estado Novo regime (1937-1945): national identity and culture and intellectuals’ engagement in the discussion of these concepts, as well as their participation within the political regime. The author also offers some observations on political and cultural relations between Brazil and the US. Finally, some commentaries on the political importance of the Brazilian territory as a physical and human space for the constitution of national identity are also provided.
