Resumo: Historically, the female presence in the scientific construction occurred amid numerous barriers, until women rose to prominent positions in science. Even today, the Nobel laureates show the area of Physics has a low representation of women scientists. In the context of science education, there is unfamiliarity about examples of women scientists whose contributions caused changes in science and technology. To counteract this context in teaching, this article aims to present the knowledge developed by scientist Maria Goeppert-Mayer that led her to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1963. Based on the study of scientific articles that are related to the scientist's contributions, the results present an instructional text that can be used by teachers in physics classes. Also, this article describes a didactic proposal based on Potentially Significant Teaching Units that can serve as a suggestion for approaching this knowledge in physics teaching, with emphasis on the discussion of this theme for high school students.
