The teaching of astronomy and the history and philosophy of science in the view of astronomy teachers in undergraduate physics courses

In this work, we present the results of a research that sought to outline the discipline of astronomy in physics degrees courses in southern Brazil. Based on a more comprehensive research, in this work we focus the discussion on the view of the teachers of these courses regarding the history and philosophy of science and their teaching practice in the initial training of physics teachers. To reach these teachers, we used data from the 2017 National Student Performance Exam platform and identified twenty-eight institutions that have a degree in physics course with astronomy subjects in their curriculum. Through the teachers' answers to a questionnaire, we categorized some views on the scientific activity and practice of these teachers with the undergraduates, identifying some inadequate views such as the unproblematic view and the empirical-inductivist view, although we have also identified positive statements in this regard. Discussing the responses of these professors along with what has been pointed out in the teaching of astronomy and science in general, we suggest that, as it is a topic that usually draws students' attention, we should be concerned about possible inadequate views in the teaching of astronomy, as they can be reflected in the formation of the physics teacher and, consequently, in their future practice with high school students.
