The History of Luso-Brazilian Science and its contributions to Chemistry Teaching: Vicente Telles and the communication of chemical nomenclature in the 18th century

Resumo: The contributions of the History of Science to Science Teaching are well documented in the literature. This field can promote the teaching of scientific content through historical contextualization. It also makes it possible to develop a better understanding of the Nature of Science (NOS) through reflections on the historical episodes studied. It is noted that the field literature presents a diversity of historical episodes centered on foreign scientists (non-Brazilian scientists). Thus, the History of Brazilian Science and its contributions to Science Teaching are little explored and discussed. Given this, integrating historical episodes of Brazilian Science can benefit teaching, such as deconstructing the view that Brazil does not produce quality science and stimulating students' critical thinking about Brazilian scientific production. Moreover, a few researches focused on implementing this theme in Science Teaching. Because of this, this work studies a historical case about the first modern chemical from Brazil, Vicente Telles. The elaboration of this case study is based on a reading and analysis of primary and secondary sources to understand the Vicente Telles biography, the Brazilian and Portuguese scientific context from his time, and the construction and publicity of the work's Chemical Nomenclature from Telles. Given the above, the implementation of this case study in Basic Education can promote an appreciation of Brazilian science, the identification of the students with the national scientists, the rescue and the preservation of the memory of Vicente Telles, and the demystification of the conception that quality science can only be developed internationally.

Essa pode promover o ensino dos conteúdos científicos através da contextualização histórica e, também, possibilita desenvolver melhores compreensões da Natureza da Ciência (NdC) mediante reflexões dos episódios históricos estudados. Nota-se que a literatura do campo apresenta uma diversidade de episódios históricos centrados em cientistas estrangeiros, dessa maneira, a História da Ciência Brasileira ou Nacional e suas contribuições ao Ensino de Ciências são pouco exploradas e discutidas. Em vista disso, argumenta-se que a integração de episódios Históricos da Ciência Nacional pode ocasionar benefícios para o ensino, como desconstruir a visão de que o Brasil não produz ciência de qualidade e estimular o pensamento crítico dos estudantes sobre a produção científica nacional. Ademais, há um número reduzido de pesquisas voltadas para a implementação desta temática no Ensino de Ciências, e por isso este trabalho se constitui como um estudo de caso histórico sobre o primeiro químico moderno do Brasil, Vicente Telles. A elaboração deste estudo de caso se baseia na leitura e análise de fontes primárias e secundárias, com o intuito de compreender a biografia de Vicente Telles, o contexto científico brasileiro e português de sua época e a construção e divulgação da obra Nomenclatura Química de Telles.
