This study proposes to demonstrate that photography, as a social document, is characterized as an important source of information that finds in albums a place for organizing and building memory and, in this case, family memory. It investigates the path from invention to the improvement of photographic technique, its rise as a document arising from the important contribution of the Escola dos Annales, and from Paul Otlet's efforts, regarding the expansion of the notion of document, which added a documentary value to photography. It is a descriptive and exploratory research that adopts the bibliographic technique to support and achieve the proposed objectives and as a result, demonstrates that photographic albums, as repositories of memory and information, allow families to reread their own past, their relationships, opening the possibility of encounters, reunions and the creation of new and resignified narratives about their own stories.
