The use of the technologies for production and storage of documents in all areas of society, has caused difficulties about the organization, location and retrieval of informational objects, founded in different devices and supports. In this context, the use of Alfresco software is a viable option, because it is open source, does not require much knowledge for the installation and allows a description of the objects through metadata. In this line, the objective of this work was to verify the possibility of using the Dublin Core metadata standard for describing documents without Alfresco relatives, in this way, the use of Alfresco would enable a search, retrieval and digital preservation of personal documents. As a methodological procedure for the theoretical documentary study, the exploratory step was performed from the analysis of the software. The results showed that Alfresco allows a construction of personal memory, which is why a description of personal and familiar documents for a search, access, retrieval and preservation of family documents, contributing to a communication of family history and memory.
