Resumo: The performance of The Company of Jesus, the Ignatians, in Brazil, was only possible due to a series of measures by the Portuguese Monarchy, including funds from the Real Treasury. The Portuguese Monarchy offered them support for maintenance, creating a necessary structure for their establishment, favoring impulse and growth in number to religious people and their activities, during the sixteenth century. This statement is based on a series of found evidences from documents, relating to the colonial life in Brazil, as Royal Charter, Letters, Provisions paid to Ignatians since their arrival in 1549, extending throughout the century XVI and XVII and culminating with the order removal in 1759. Contrary to the thesis of the Company of Jesus autonomy, the purpose of this paper is to point out that the evangelizing mission depended mainly on funding from the Portuguese treasury, so important for the consolidation of Brazilian settlement, expansion, and evangelization.
