This article contextualizes photography as an archival document loaded with information capable of revealing the context of production and sociocultural aspects that carry interpretative potential. In this way, this research aimed to highlight the elements of archival description adopted by the Photo Library of the Pierre Verger Foundation (FPV) in the face of possible polysemic discourses in photography. It is configured as a descriptive study since it sought to describe a certain phenomenon or object in a contextualized way; in this case, the FPV online Photo Library. The research is also characterized as a documentary, whose methods adopted were case study and direct observation of the Photo Library. Through data analysis, it was found that FPV description activities occur from the general to the particular, in a hierarchical and thematic structure, which is consolidated as an intellectual activity that provides possibilities for mutual understanding between objectivity and subjectivity. present in the photographs. Therefore, considering the informational aspects and interpretative nuances that permeate the photographic document, it is understood that the archival description can favor the process of appropriation of organic information and the interpretation of sociocultural content crystallized in the photograph.
