ResumoO artigo apresenta breve problematização do conceito hodierno de teoria, baseando-se para tanto no uso da palavra em português (seção I). Contrapõe a tal uso o sentido grego do termo e explica três aspectos de sua experiência, do ponto de vista histórico e filológico (II). Na próxima seção, examina como alguns pensadores pré-socráticos – Anaxágoras, Parmênides e Pitágoras – usaram o conceito de teoria para ilustrar sua atividade filosófica (III). Em seguida, discute criticamente a tese de Andrea Nightingale, segundo a qual Platão foi o primeiro filósofo a tomar a teoria como paradigma para a filosofia. A autora afirma que Platão, Aristóteles e Filipe de Opus criaram esse conceito e o atribuíram aos pensadores supracitados como parte de uma estratégia de auto-afirmação da filosofia. No entanto, oferecem-se alguns argumentos para mostrar que elementos da experiência da teoria já estavam pressupostos na imagem do sábio que é anterior a Platão (IV). A conclusão argumenta que, embora Platão tenha dado uma forma literária e conceitual à experiência da teoria, ele o fez utilizando-se de algumas ideias tradicionais já aceitas pelos Gregos (V).AbstractI present in this article a brief discussion of the current concept of theory based on the usage of this word in Portuguese (I). I contrast such usage with the Greek meaning of the term and explain three aspects of the Greek experience from both historical and philological points of view (II). I next examine how some pre-Socratic thinkers – Anaxagoras, Parmenides and Pythagoras – used the concept of theory to illustrate their intellectual activity (III). After this, I critically discuss Andrea Nightingale’s thesis that Plato was the first philosopher to take cultural theory as a paradigm to philosophy. Nightingale claims that Plato, Aristotle and Phillip of Opus created this concept and, more than that, ascribed it to the pre-Socratic thinkers mentioned above as part of a self-affirmation strategy to promote philosophy as they understood it, while I offer some arguments to show that certain elements of the Greek experience of theory were already presupposed by the general image of the sage that existed well before Plato (IV). My conclusion is that although Plato gave a deep conceptual and literary shape to the experience of theory, he did it using some traditional ideas already accepted by the Greeks (V).
