Resumo: It is consensual the idea that the construction industry has been leaving a high ecological footprint, mainly due to the materials used and the techniques adopted. In this regard, it becomes essential that we address our concerns to the research of alternatives to the conventional methods of doing engineering. From an ecological and socially responsible bias, the present research points out the possibilities of using bamboo as a building material, carrying out, in a systematic way, a concise bibliographic review regarding its characterization, its properties and its several uses. The study was developed using national and international literature sources, exploring databases such as Google Scholar, Portal de Periódicos da Capes and SciELO. The results obtained highlight the potentialities of the bamboo as a building material, it’s important to enhance however the need for treatments, the caution in performing the joints and the relevance of a suitable design in order to minimize the exposure of the structure. In general, its lightness, high strength, abundance in tropical regions, versatility, economic feasibility, low environmental impact and speedy growth, permits the bamboo to be inserted among the construction supplies, bringing changes and resignifications in the socio-economic and environmental spheres, on a national scale.

Neste sentido, torna-se imprescindível endereçarmos nossas atenções ao estudo de alternativas aos métodos convencionais de se fazer engenharia. Partindo de um viés ecológico e socialmente responsável, o presente trabalho coloca em luz as possibilidades de utilização do bambu enquanto material de construção, realizando, de maneira sistemática, uma revisão bibliográfica concisa acerca de sua caracterização, suas propriedades e seus diversos usos. O estudo desempenhado utilizou-se de fontes nacionais e internacionais da literatura, explorando bancos de dados como Google Scholar, Portal de Periódicos da Capes e SciELO. Os resultados obtidos evidenciam as potencialidades do bambu como material de engenharia, devendo-se ressalvar, no entanto, a necessidade da realização dos tratamentos, o cuidado na execução das conexões e a importância de um projeto adequado para minimização da exposição da estrutura.
