SANITATION INFFLUENCE ON RIVERS WATER QUALITY: A WATER QUALITY MODELLING ANALISYS

Resumo: Water pollution is a problem in Brazilian watersheds and, even though monitoring is fundamental, it is not enough for the management of water resources. Therefore, this paper aimed to present water quality modeling as a decision support tool for water management in the Piabanha watershed. Due to the urbanization in the basin, both the wastewater treatment conditions; and Piabanha river’s water quality, according to the WQIFAL index, were diagnosed. The river was modeled, through QUAL-UFMG, for the average flow regimes, QMLT, and reference, Q95. The scenarios were compared from the concentrations and framing classes, by stretches of the river. It was diagnosed that, although the city of Petropolis has the best wastewater infrastructure in the basin, it is the main responsible for the pollution of the Piabanha River. According to the model results, the initial stretches of the river were characterized as classes 3 and 4. It was also verified that the Piabanha basin is vulnerable to scarcity scenarios due to its need of flow to dilute the discharged effluents. Finally, the water quality modeling allowed the identification of the regions that have the greatest impact on the river, and is an important decision support tool in water management.

Dessa forma, o presente trabalho visou apresentar a modelagem de qualidade de água como ferramenta de apoio a decisão na gestão hídrica na bacia do Piabanha. Devido à urbanização na bacia, essa foi diagnosticada quanto as condições de esgotamento sanitário; e qualidade das águas do rio Piabanha, em função do índice IQAFAL. O rio foi modelado, através do QUAL-UFMG, para os regimes de vazões médias, QMLT, e de referência, Q95. Comparou-se os cenários a partir das concentrações e classes de enquadramento, por trechos do rio. Diagnosticou-se que, apesar da cidade de Petrópolis possuir os melhores índices esgotamento sanitário da bacia, é o principal responsável pela poluição do rio Piabanha. Através da modelagem, caracterizou-se trechos iniciais do rio como classes 3 e 4. Verificou-se ainda que a bacia do Piabanha vulnerável a cenários de escassez devido à necessidade de vazão para diluir os efluentes.
