Remote simultaneous interpretation at conferences during the COVID-19 pandemic: dimensions of an emerging practice

Resumo: This article aims to present a descriptive analysis of interaction strategies used by teams of Libras-Portuguese interpreters in remote simultaneous interpretation of conferences during the COVID-19 pandemic. Interactions established between eight interpreters in eleven academic and cultural appreciative-informative conferences held from May to December 2020 are analyzed. The analysis reveals the mobilization of specific strategies related to (i) preparation, when professionals need to adapt structures to work from their homes and instruct the technical transmission support teams about the Libras space in screen and the ways in which interpreters are shifted; (ii) interpretation, when the team of interpreters needs to communicate without jeopardizing transmission; and (iii) the assessment when the interpreters somehow try to systematize the experiences in communities of practices in order to guarantee the construction of collective norms and guidelines for this type of performance.

Se analizan las interacciones establecidas entre ocho intérpretes en once jornadas académicas y culturales apreciativo-informativas celebradas de mayo a diciembre de 2020. El análisis revela la movilización de estrategias específicas relacionadas con (i) la preparación, cuando los profesionales necesitan adecuar estructuras para trabajar desde sus hogares e instruir a los equipos de soporte técnico de transmisión sobre el espacio de la pantalla donde está la traducción y las formas de alternancia de los intérpretes; (ii) interpretación, cuando el equipo de intérpretes necesita comunicarse sin comprometer la transmisión; y (iii) evaluación, cuando los intérpretes buscan sistematizar experiencias de interpretación en comunidades de práctica para garantizar la construcción de normas y pautas colectivas para este tipo de actuación.Esse artigo tem como objetivo apresentar uma análise descritiva de estratégias de interação utilizadas por equipes de intérpretes de Libras-Português na interpretação simultânea remota de conferências durante a pandemia de COVID-19. São analisadas interações estabelecidas entre oito intérpretes em onze conferências apreciativo-informativas do tipo acadêmica e cultural realizadas no período de maio a dezembro de 2020.
