Variable behavior of the fricative /ʒ/ in the cultural norms spoken in Fortaleza-CE

Based on the theoretical-methodological postulates of variationist sociolinguistics and the theory of lexical diffusion, we investigated the variable behavior of the alveopalatal fricative /ʒ/ in the beginning of a syllable and in a sample of cultured spoken language from Fortaleza-CE. We aimed to analyze the performance of linguistic and extralinguistic factors on the maintenance of [ʒ] in co-occurrence with its aspiration [h]. To do so, we selected a sample of spoken language composed of 18 inquiries extracted from the Projeto Português Oral Culto de Fortaleza (PORCUFORT). In general, we find that the groups of linguistic factors pertinent to the phenomenon in focus are Nature of the word and the Subsequent phonological context. As for extralinguistic factors, sex and age range act on the variable behavior of /ʒ/. From these results, we conclude that, in the speech sample of this study, the realization of the fricative /ʒ/, in the beginning of a syllable, is a variable phenomenon duly influenced by factors of internal and external order to the linguistic system.
