Resumo: Discusses major issues related to the nature, determinants, effects, and measurement of language attitudes and attitudes in general. These theoretical and methodological issues were also examined in a series of studies on students from 2 Jerusalem high schools, one of secular and one of religious orientation. Procedures used to measure attitudes and language proficiency and usage are described in detail. In addition, a study of the differential effectiveness of Arabic and Hebrew on persuasion is presented. The need for the combining of efforts of attitude theorists and sociolinguists is emphasized.
