Resumo: This work aims to analyze the African and Afro-Brazilian Religions in the city of Caruaru (PE), to carry out a socio-spatial analysis of the “terreiros” in this municipality, seeking to understand how they are distributed in the urban fabric and the social place that these religiosities occupy the urban dynamics of the city. To this end, we used field research carried out by the GEMIC group using bibliographical research and historical sources on the topic. In addition, we carried out field research visiting three “terreiros”, with the objetice of deconstructing possible distorted representations of the phenomenon. In general, based on the theoretical discussion about urban and social space and the influence of relationships between different groups in the construction and organization of this territory from the perspective of religion, it was possible to present an overview of the way in which religions of African and Afro-Brazilian origins are inserted in the urban space of the city of Caruaru, presenting a particular configuration of appropriation and use of this space very similar to the reality of these cults in most cities in Brazilian territory.
