Resumo: This article discusses the uses of sound in early cinema based on a case study: the film adaptation of the “fantastic-lyric drama” O Remorso Vivo (1867), by Furtado Coelho and Joaquim Serra, filmed by Photo-Cinematographia Brasileira (1909); exhibited in Rio de Janeiro with musical accompaniment by Arthur Napoleão, the author of the original music of the play. It recovers the critical fortune of both the play and the film, in order to explain the continuities between the theater and the early cinema. The article especially emphasizes the uses of sound in this cinema, and the role played by Arthur Napoleão in the musical scene of Rio de Janeiro at the time. The research is situated at the interface of cinema, theater and music historiographies, mobilizing, above all, primary sources from the press.
