Resumo: This work analyses the variable monophthongization of the falling oral diphthong [ej] in the northwestern São Paulo variety. Through this process, the glide is deleted, e.g. gelad[ej]ra ~ gelad[e]ra (‘fridge’) and p[ej]xe ~ p[e]xe (‘fish’). This research is based on the Theory of Linguistic Variation and Change (Labov, 2008 [1972]). Methodologically, through the Goldvarb-X program, qualitative and quantitative analyses were conducted of 12 interviews from the IBORUNA database, as a result of the ALIP project (FAPESP 03/08058-6 - UNESP / IBILCE - Gonçalves, 2023 [2007]). From a total of 1,057 occurrences, 376 monophthongized, corresponding to 35.6% of the data. Most occurrences of monophthongization occurred in the context of subsequent tap or fricative, e.g. cad[e]ra (‘chair’) and qu[e]jo (‘cheese’), highlighting the influence of linguistic factors to the application of the phenomenon, as observed in other varieties of Brazilian Portuguese.
