Serendipity in the context of Information Science: perspectives for studies with informational subjects

Objective: Serendipity has been consolidated within the scope of scientific discoveries and has been investigated in the international scientific literature of the field of Information Science with regard to the interaction of informational subjects with information environments and systems, as well as with the information itself. Considering its importance in the study areas that deal with informational subjects, this article aims to: investigate how serendipity has been approached in the context of Information Science in relation to its theoretical and conceptual aspects; and present their preliminary contributions to the studies of Informational Behavior and Information Literacy.Methods: Bibliographic research and qualitative approach.Results: The results show that serendipity contributes significantly to the mentioned studies.Conclusions: It is concluded that brazilian Information Science could develop theoretical and empirical studies in relation to serendipity, in order to apply it in research with informational subjects.
