Resumo: The city of Rio de Janeiro has received great investments of capital and is on the vergeof hosting one of the gratest sport megaevents. In order to ensure the social tensionswill be kept balanced, the Pacifying Police Units (Unidades de Polícia Pacificadoras -UPP) have been occupying some Rio de Janeiro slums for 5 years. The media has beensupporting that initiative and has stressed the importance of sports for consolidation ofthe public safety project. This article aims to understand the speech of the media byusing Antonio Gramsci and the Critical Discourse Analysis as reference.

A fim de que a cidade ofereça garantias de que as tensões sociais serão mantidas em níveis equilibrados, há 5 anos as Unidades de Polícia Pacificadora estão ocupando algumas favelas cariocas. A grande imprensa tem apoiado a iniciativa e ressalta a importância do esporte para a consolidação do projeto de segurança pública.
