The history of collective day care centers and their actors in France, a contribution to the question "Early childhood and the social relations of sex"

Resumo: This article, from a corpus of first and second hand documents, contributes to the sociogenesis of collective crèches in France and focuses on “lullabbies”, first job of the nurseries in the 19th century. Under the combined action of men, doctors and philanthropists, and women from the bourgeoisie and aristocratic backgrounds, the crèche became a space for the education of mothers from poor backgrounds as well as their children. Through the child, to reach the mother, then the father… "Reforming morals" and bodies, to transform society in line with the political representations and designs of the privileged classes. The moral qualities of both mothers and lullabies were exalted. Bourgeois women supervise, monitor and train these women, showing the intertwining of gender and class social relations. The social and political project at the origin of the institutionalization of the crèches allows us to approach the way in which the definition of professionalization in the field of early childhood was constructed and whose effects still persist today, beyond the renewal of the formal curriculum of the crèches: the low level of professions mix in the field of early childhood is constitutive of the history of the institution and of gender relations.

Sous l’action conjuguée des hommes, médecins et philanthropes, et des femmes des milieux de la bourgeoisie et de l’aristocratie, la crèche devient l’espace d’éducation des mères pauvres autant que de leurs enfants. A travers l’enfant, atteindre la mère, puis le père… "Réformer les mœurs" et les corps, pour transformer la société à l’aune des représentations et desseins politiques des classes privilégiées. Les qualités morales des mères comme des berceuses sont exaltées. Les femmes bourgeoises encadrent, surveillent et forment ces femmes, donnant à voir l’intrication des rapports sociaux de sexe et de classe. Le projet social et politique à l’origine de l’institutionnalisation des crèches permet en effet d’approcher la façon dont s’est construite la définition de la professionnalisation en direction de la petite enfance et dont les effets perdurent encore aujourd’hui, au-delà du renouvellement du curriculum formel des crèches : la faible mixité des professions du champ de la petite enfance est constitutive de l’histoire de l’institution et des rapports de sexe.Este artigo contribui para a sociogénese das creches colectivas na França e centra-se nas "babás", primeira profissão das creches no século XIX. Sob a ação combinada de homens, médicos e filantropos, mulheres da burguesia e aristocracia, a creche tornou-se um lugar para a educação de mães pobres, bem como, dos seus filhos. Através da criança, chegava-se à mãe, depois ao pai... "Reformando a moral" e os corpos, para transformar a sociedade de acordo com as representações e orientações políticas das classes privilegiadas. As qualidades morais das mães e das "babás" foram exaltadas. As mulheres burguesas supervisionam, monitorizam e treinam estas mulheres, mostrando o entrelaçamento das relações de género e de classe.
