Resumo: The definition of the literary repertoire in the nineteenth century in different countries was the result of the actions of agents who established international networks of contacts, from which they outlined business strategies in the book market and chose works that would be of interest to their readers. Baptiste-Louis Garnier had relationships with various intermediaries and professionals in the publishing field and aligned his actions with the interests of his dealers, the demands of his audience and, of course, his own desires for success in his endeavors. This article aims to understand Garnier's actions and his interference in delineating the translated literature offered to Brazilian readers. Based on correspondence from this editor sent to Louis Hachette, we will seek to analyze how preserving or violating foreign authors' copyrights affected the circulation of translations in Brazil, especially the works of two of the most celebrated novelists of the time, Jules Verne and Countess of Ségur.

Baptiste-Louis Garnier entreteve relação com diversos intermediários e profissionais do campo editorial, coadunando suas ações com os interesses das pessoas com quem negociava, com as demandas de seu público e, claro, com seus próprios anseios de êxito de seus empreendimentos. Este artigo tem como objetivo compreender as ações de Garnier e sua interferência no delineamento da literatura traduzida oferecida aos leitores brasileiros.
