Resumo: This paper analyzes the emergence of the reporters' profession in the press in Rio de Janeiro between the 1880s and 1900s. For this purpose, statutes of associations, newspapers, and other periodicals like Almanak Laemmert were used, paying attention to the development of journalistic companies and the impact on the lives of their workers. In this scenario, the trajectory of the black and socialist reporter Gustavo de Lacerda is treated centrally in this research as part of the process of understanding the centrality of the reporter professional class in the foundation of the most expressive press organizations that emerged at the beginning of the 20th century, the Circulo dos Reporters and the Press Association.
