Resumo: The present article examines how the novels Sula by Toni Morrison, and The Women of Brewster Place by Gloria Naylor, deconstruct long-held controlling images of black women, particularly the Matriarch. The characters Eva Peace and Mattie Michael provide great illustrations of black women who have denied many of the places reserved for them in society, consequently deconstructing controlling images white society imposes on them. These novels place emphasis on black women’s plural roles in society, thereby opening possibilities for a liberating experience of black womanhood.

UFSC2017-01-27info:eu-repo/semantics/articleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionapplication/pdfhttps://periodicos.ufsc.br/index.php/desterro/article/view/2175-8026.2017v70n1p6910.5007/2175-8026.2017v70n1p69Ilha do Desterro A Journal of English Language, Literatures in English and Cultural Studies; Vol. 70 No. 1 (2017); 69-80Ilha do Desterro A Journal of English Language, Literatures in English and Cultural Studies; v. 70 n. 1 (2017); 69-802175-80260101-4846reponame:Ilha do Desterroinstname:Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC)instacron:UFSCenghttps://periodicos.ufsc.br/index.php/desterro/article/view/2175-8026.2017v70n1p69/33487Copyright (c) 2017 Ane Caroline Faria Ribeiro, Jose Paiva Santosinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessRibeiro, Ane Caroline FariaSantos, Jose Paiva2019-01-25T09:07:59Zoai:periodicos.ufsc.br:article/45550Revistahttp://www.periodicos.ufsc.br/index.php/desterroPUBhttps://periodicos.ufsc.br/index.php/desterro/oaiilha@cce.ufsc.br||corseuil@cce.ufsc.br||ilhadodesterro@gmail.com2175-80260101-4846opendoar:2019-01-25T09:07:59Ilha do Desterro - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC)false
