Tais instituições evoluíram acompanhando o desenvolvimento das sociedades humanas a ponto de hoje desempenharem papel central em diversas áreas de estudo das Ciências Naturais. Dentre essas áreas, o estudo da biodiversidade tem como importante instrumento as coleções zoológicas, que são encontradas em museus de história natural, departamentos universitários e institutos de pesquisa, dentre outras instituições. O Brasil, encabeçando a lista de países com maior biodiversidade do mundo, possui forte tradição na pesquisa zoológica, assim como possui coleções de história natural de importância internacional. A Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, uma das mais importantes do país, abriga atualmente em seu Departamento de Ecologia e Zoologia 12 coleções científicas zoológicas provenientes dos estudos realizados por seus laboratórios. Este trabalho reuniu informações acerca do atual estado em que se encontram tais coleções a fim de construir um diagnóstico que compile essas informações de maneira sucinta.Natural history collections are protagonists in the storage and cataloguing of testimonies of the history of life on the planet. Such institutions have evolved following the development of human societies to the point that today they perform a central role in several areas of study in Natural Sciences. Among these areas, the study of biodiversity has as one of its main instruments zoological collections, which are found in natural history museums, university departments and research institutes, among other institutions. Brazil, at the top of the list of countries with the greatest biodiversity in the world, has a strong tradition in zoological research, as well as collections of natural history of international importance. Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, one of the most important universities in the country, currently houses 12 zoological scientific collections in its Department of Ecology and Zoology.
