Para tal análise, utilizou-se o conceito de distopia e utopia na Teoria da História e Literatura, estabelecendo o conceito de distopia como uma categoria de análise operacional para o trabalho. Destaca-se outras obras distópicas feministas ao longo do século XX, além de The Handmaid?s Tale, intuindo a compreensão de como essas obras refletem criticamente sobre questões de gênero, poder e opressão. Ao longo do trabalho, investiga-se como a obra de Atwood dialoga com manifestações feministas contemporâneas e sua dimensão temporal enquanto literatura, permitindo diálogos entre diferentes períodos históricos. A partir da investigação sobre a temporalidade na obra, com foco na estrutura não-linear de tempo presente em The Handmaid's Tale, buscou-se analisar o contexto histórico da obra. Discute-se a influência da obra 1984 e de George Orwell na criação de Margaret Atwood, destacando diferentes períodos históricos incorporados à narrativa, como a Modernidade Tardia, a Modernidade Clássica, o Tempo Sagrado e o tempo distópico de Gilead. Além da exploração sobre a não-linearidade do romance, investiga-se o epílogo do livro, intitulado Historical Notes on The Handmaid?s Tale, como uma possível crítica da autora a uma historiografia excludente e misógina. Buscou-se responder a perguntas sobre a ironia presente no epílogo e na análise dos professores, a natureza \"ustópica\" da obra, o monopólio masculino da narrativa histórica e a possível negação de credibilidade à perspectiva das mulheres. Refletiu-se sobre a intencionalidade de Atwood ao incluir esses elementos na obra e exploramos as relações de poder, discursos dominantes e formas de silenciamento presentes na narrativa. Incorporou-se entrevistas de Margaret Atwood sobre The Handmaid?s Tale e movimentações feministas, em diferentes momentos da trajetória da escritora com o objetivo de compreender os contextos históricos que cercam a obra. O presente trabalho objetivou compreender o livro The Handmaid's Tale dentro de uma perspectiva e metodologia de história global, trazendo reflexões sobre igualdade de gênero, entrelaçamento de espaços globais e glocais, histórias feministas e diferentes temporalidades e linearidades.Abstract: This master's thesis aims to investigate the narrative of the book The Handmaid's Tale, published in 1985 by Canadian writer Margaret Atwood. For this analysis, the concept of dystopia and utopia in the Theory of History and Literature was used, establishing the concept of dystopia as a category of operational analysis for the work. Other feminist dystopian works throughout the 20th century are highlighted, in addition to The Handmaid's Tale, intuiting the understanding of how these works reflect critically on issues of gender, power and oppression. Throughout the work, we investigate how Atwood's work dialogues with contemporary feminist manifestations and its temporal dimension as literature, allowing dialogues between different historical periods. Based on the investigation of temporality in the work, focusing on the non-linear structure of present time in The Handmaid's Tale, an attempt was made to analyze the historical context of the work. The influence of 1984 and George Orwell on the creation of Margaret Atwood is discussed, highlighting different historical periods incorporated into the narrative, such as Late Modernity, Classical Modernity, Sacred Time and the dystopian time of Gilead. In addition to exploring the novel's non-linearity, the book's epilogue, entitled Historical Notes on The Handmaid's Tale, is investigated as a possible criticism by the author of an exclusionary and misogynistic historiography. We sought to answer questions about the irony present in the epilogue and in the teachers' analysis, the \"ustopic\" nature of the work, the male monopoly of the historical narrative and the possible denial of credibility to the women's perspective. We reflected on Atwood's intentionality by including these elements in the work and we explored the power relations, dominant discourses and forms of silencing present in the narrative. Margaret Atwood's interviews about The Handmaid's Tale and feminist movements were incorporated, in different moments of the writer's trajectory, with the objective of understanding the historical contexts that surround the work.
