Isto levou o tema a intensas discussões e mobilizações nas últimas décadas, pois este prejudica tanto animais marinhos quanto terrestres, incluindo a própria espécie responsável pela criação do material, ao afetar a saúde e o meio ambiente. Para enfrentar a crise da poluição por plásticos a educação ambiental é frequentemente apontada como o instrumento norteador, no entanto, é importante reconhecer possíveis barreiras para sua implementação efetiva e buscar abordagens complementares e integradas para lidar com essa questão complexa. Assim, através de pesquisa bibliográfica, foram levantados quatro limitantes à implementação efetiva da educação ambiental, tomando o contexto brasileiro de base, sendo elas as estruturas de educação, a dinâmica socioeconômica, a exposição da população e a indústria de plásticos. Diante da complexidade do problema e das soluções necessárias, fica claro que a educação ambiental não pode atuar isoladamente, exigindo ações conjuntas do poder público, da indústria e da sociedade como um todo. Sendo importante também, equalizar as responsabilidades em relação ao consumo de plásticos, não o atribuindo exclusivamente aos consumidores, mas a todos os envolvidos no ciclo de vida deste material.The uncontrolled use of plastic has become a major environmental challenge by generating negative impacts from the extraction of its raw material to its disposal. This subject has led intense discussions and mobilizations in recent decades, as it harms both marine and terrestrial fauna, including the specie responsible for the creation of the material, affecting the health and the environment. To address the plastic pollution crisis, environmental education is often pointed out as the guiding instrument; however, it is important to recognize possible barriers to its effective implementation and to seek complementary and integrated approaches to deal with this complex issue. Through literature research, four limiting factors for an effective implementation of environmental education were raised, based on the Brazilian context: the educational structures, the socioeconomic dynamics, the exposure of the population and the plastics industry. Given the intricacies of the problem and the solutions required, it’s clear that environmental education cannot act in an isolated manner, requiring joint actions by the government, the industry and society as a whole.
