Gender and women’s transversality in Social Assistance policy: a documentary analysis

The themes gender and women are cross-cutting in Social Assistance Policy is the object of attention from that article. Qualitative data were produced by a documentary analysis of regulatory frameworks of the Sistema Único de Assistência Social (SUAS). Two categories emerged from the analysis: “gender and women’s tessitura in the documents” and “an interface of rights violations with a social assistance policy”. Gender appears coupled to equal rights, respect for diversity and combating discrimination. Women appear as target audience of social assistance, by experiencing situations of vulnerability or violation of rights and violence. There is still an incipient and uncritical approach to this issue in official documents reflecting the risk of maintaining traditional gender roles. It is evident the importance of discussion of gender for the understanding of the processes of exclusion and discrimination of the target audience of SUAS.
