Clinical management of breastfeeding: the role of nurses in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

Resumo: | Aim: to understand the clinical management of breastfeeding performed by nurses in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of the University Hospital Antônio Pedro, Universidade Federal Fluminense. Method: a descriptive, exploratory study with qualitative approach, through semi-structured interviews with 11 nurses working in this Unit, whose statements were submitted to content analysis in the thematic mode. Results: two categories emerged: the guidance strategies of nurses in the clinical management of breastfeeding in the NICU; and Network of promotion and support for nursing mothers at hospital discharge: a path to successful breastfeeding. Both categories focus on the guidelines as a strategy for encouraging and supporting breastfeeding. Final considerations: nurses trained and sensitized to the practice of clinical management of breastfeeding contribute to the support of breastfeeding and coping with early weaning |

Método: Estudio descriptivo, exploratorio con enfoque cualitativo, mediante entrevistas semi-estructuradas con 11 enfermeras que trabajan en dicha Unidad, cuyas declaraciones fueron sometidas a análisis de contenido en la modalidad temática. Resultados: Se obtuvieron dos categorías: las estrategias de orientación de las enfermeras en el manejo clínico de la lactancia en la UCIN; y la red de promoción y apoyo a las madres lactantes en el alta hospitalaria: un camino para la lactancia exitosa. Ambos se centran en las directrices como una estrategia para fomentar y apoyar la lactancia materna. Consideraciones finales: el enfermero capacitado y sensibilizado por la práctica de manejo clínico de la lactancia materna contribuye al apoyo de la lactancia y la resistencia al destete precoz.Doi: 10.5902/2179769214687Objetivo: compreender o manejo clínico da amamentação realizado pelos enfermeiros na Unidade de Terapia Intensiva Neonatal do Hospital Universitário Antônio Pedro da Universidade Federal Fluminense. Método: estudo descritivo, exploratório, com abordagem qualitativa, mediante entrevista semiestruturada com 11 enfermeiras atuantes da referida Unidade, cujos depoimentos foram submetidos à análise de conteúdo na modalidade temática. Resultados: foram obtidas duas categorias: as estratégias de orientação dos enfermeiros no manejo clínico da amamentação na UTI Neonatal; e Rede de promoção e apoio à nutriz na alta hospitalar: um caminho para o sucesso da amamentação. Ambas enfocam as orientações como estratégia para o incentivo e apoio ao aleitamento materno.
