Nursing in intensive therapy unit: attention to patients with psychiatric symptoms

Resumo: | Aim: to know the interventions performed by the nursing team in two intensive care units along with patients with psychiatric symptomatology. Method: qualitative and descriptive. Twenty-eight members of the nursing team participated. The data were obtained through a semistructured interview and a non-participant structured observation. The analysis followed the steps of Content Analysis. Results: three categories emerged; the first one refers to dialogue as an instrument of care; the second addresses issues related to mechanical / medication containment; and the last one refers to the family as a therapeutic element in the care of patients with psychiatric symptoms in an intensive care unit (UTI). Conclusion: ICU patients may present psychiatric symptoms due to organic disease or emotional exhaustion due to their presence in such environment. Thus, the intensive care team must be able to identify and intervene assertively with the patient, which includes dialogue and medication administration. |

Método: cualitativo y descriptivo. Participaron 28 miembros del equipo de enfermería. Los datos fueron recolectados por medio de entrevista semiestructurada y observación estructurada no participante. El análisis siguió los pasos del análisis de contenido. Resultados: del análisis surgió tres categorías, la primera se refiere al dialogo como instrumento de cuidado, la segunda trata de cuestiones inherentes a la contención mecánica/medicamentosa y la última sobre la familia como elemento terapéutico en la atención al paciente con síntoma psiquiátrico en unidad de terapia intensiva. Conclusión: el paciente internado en unidades de terapia intensiva puede presentar síntomas psiquiátricos originarios por enfermedad orgánica o por el desgaste emocional por la permanencia en ese espacio. De ese modo, el equipo de enfermería intensiva debe estar apto para identificar e intervenir de forma asertiva junto al paciente, lo que incluye diálogo y administración de medicación.Objetivo: conhecer as intervenções realizadas pela equipe de enfermagem em duas unidades de terapia intensiva junto a pacientes com sintomatologia psiquiátrica. Método: qualitativo e descritivo. Participaram 28 membros da equipe de enfermagem. Os dados foram obtidos por meio de entrevista semiestruturada e observação estruturada não participante. A análise seguiu os passos da Análise de Conteúdo. Resultados: emergiram três categorias, a primeira refere-se ao diálogo como instrumento de cuidado, a segunda aborda questões inerentes a contenção mecânica/medicamentosa e a última sobre a família como elemento terapêutico na atenção ao paciente com sintomatologia psiquiatria em unidade de terapia intensiva (UTI). Conclusão: o paciente internado em UTI pode apresentar sintomas psiquiátricos decorrentes de doença orgânica ou pelo desgaste emocional pela permanência nesse espaço.
