This article discusses both the man T.E. Lawrence and his war memoir, Seven Pillars of Wisdom (1935). Lawrence was a man who was ambivalent in his life work, in his military and diplomatic skills, in his role in Arab independence, and in his sexuality. His classic memoir of the British campaign against Turkey in Arabia is, among many other things, a handbook of guerrilla warfare that attempts to present itself as both a factual record of a military campaign and a heroic tale: of insight, courage, and determination.
