Pesquisa epidemiológica nos municípios da 28ª região de saúde do Rio Grande do Sul: internação hospitalar e mortalidade decorrentes da Diabetes Mellitus

Aim: to analyze the indicators of hospital admission and mortality due to diabetes mellitus, considering the 28th Health Area of the state of Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil). Methods: a retrospective and descriptive study of the epidemiological indicators available on the website of the State Health Secretariat. In the period of 2015 and 2016, the reported cases of hospitalization and death of individuals resulting from an intercurrent event caused by diabetes mellitus were collected, generating a mortality coefficient and hospital admission rate. For the data analysis, a value of p≤0.05 was considered significant, using Microsoft Office Excel® 2016 and the statistical application EpiInfo®. Results: when comparing the data of the studied region, it was observed that there were no discrepancies in the number of hospitalizations from one year to the other. However, it was observed that the deaths were higher in 2016. When the indicators at the state level were analyzed, a lower hospitalization rate was identified in the health region; on the other hand, the mortality coefficient increased. It is also important to note that a higher percentage of hospitalization was observed among females, while the number of deaths was higher for males. Conclusion: through this study, it was possible to analyze the indicators surveyed, tracing an epidemiological profile for the 28th Health Area of the state of Rio Grande do Sul and, in this way, to encourage health policies to minimize the impact of diabetes mellitus.
