Prevalence of anxiety, stress and depression in informal caregivers and their relation with the functionality of patients with neurological disorders

Neurological disorders can result in sequelae, a decrease in functional capacity or even a functional dependence on the subject, causing the subject to need care and support for basic daily activities, in this scenario, the role of the informal caregiver appears, who assumes the responsibility to assist the family member becoming susceptible to physical and emotional exhaustion. Object: To analyze the prevalence of anxiety, stress and depression in informal caregivers of patients with neurological disorders, to identify if there is a correlation between these symptoms in the informal caregiver, as well as to verify if there is a correlation between the symptoms present in the caregiver and the functionality of the patients assisted. Methods: A cross-sectional research with a convenience sample and descriptive and inferential analysis was performed. Data collection is based on the application of sociodemographic, anxiety, stress and depression (DASS-21) and Functional Independence Measure (MIF) questionnaires. Results: Symptoms of anxiety, stress and depression were found in informal caregivers, with a significant correlation being observed between the anxiety symptoms of the informal caregiver and the functionality of patients with neurological disorders, as well as a significant correlation between the symptoms of stress. and depression with anxiety in the caregiver. Final Considerations: It is concluded that there is a prevalence of anxiety, stress and depression in informal caregivers, as well as the functional dependence of patients with neurological changes seems to be related to the caregiver’s mental well-being.
