Mental health of university students in southern Brazil during a COVID-19 pandemic

Objective: To assess the mental health of university students in the health fi eld during the COVID-19 pandemic. Method: This is a cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach, carried out at a public university in southern Brazil, involving students f rom courses in the area of health. Data were collected online using a form for characterizing students, the Mental Health Inventory. For data analysis, descriptive and inferential statistics were used. Results: The research included 527 students with a mean age of 22.3 (±4.6) years. In the assessment of the Mental Health Inventory, the subscales “Loss of emotional/behavioral control” and “Emotional ties” showed moderate mental health. The subscales “Anxiety”, “Depression”, “Positive affect”, the dimensions “Distress” and “Well-being” and the global assessment of the instrument presented scores indicative of severe mental health. Final Considerations: The mental health of students during the pandemic is susceptible and sociodemographic and academic factors may be contributing to this condition.
